This is a drive shaft axle seal, I would say half of the CV jointed drive shaft BMWs we have our heads under this has magically disappeared. As in a dealer or indy shop had no idea it needed to be inspected each time the drive shaft came off and care taken when being put back on. The result is the packing grease gets flung out all over the underbody and the CV joint begins to lose lubrication. This car was caught in time.
